Following three successful years in partnership with an architect, Jim Harris decided to prove that God was indeed in the details by going it alone. Initially continuing to provide marketing services largely for architects, Jim formed Harris Associates in 1986 with Jill Cooper.
In 1987 the new business moved into St Michael’s Hall, Headingley, a 7,500 sqft disused Victorian Listed church offering significant potential for future business expansion. The only compromise was the huge investment required to make the building immediately habitable and the need to rehome the resident itinerants! Initially, the business continued to provide design and print, advertising, architectural and studio services to the construction, building products and interiors sectors.
In the early 1990s a new division was formed to provide PR services to the construction sector at a time when the industry was facing a deep recession. The need for clients to win new business in a challenging climate proved to be a catalyst for growth. Additional services were added throughout the decade including exhibition design, crisis management, media training and website design and programming.
