Getting to Know: Ross
Next up in our getting to know series is our web developer and trainee designer and analyst, Ross Lammin. You might already know that Ross loves his guitar and Xbox, but can you guess what tournaments he used to compete in? You’re in the right place to find out!
Tell us a bit about your role at Harris.
My role is full stack web developer and designer and analyst in training. Since starting at Harris, I’ve been working closely with several websites, covering programming and site administration. With the support of the team, I’ve also been learning about design, specification documents with Google Analytics, looking at how data helps inform development, and liaising directly with clients.
How would you describe the culture at Harris?
Harris is a laidback and friendly place to work with great social aspects. The team really strives to deliver results with new technologies and ways of communicating with an audience.
When did you decide you wanted to work in web development?
I’ve been interested in technology since I was young and always wanted to find out how it worked. Although I never went to college, I kept striving to learn and self-teach. Last year I completed a year-long apprenticeship, learning the ropes – not just in programming but all different methods of the digital industry like UX, design, methodologies and product organisation.
What’s your favourite thing about your job?
Everything! I love my job and I am always striving to better myself in everything I do. If I had to pick one thing, it would be problem solving; I like digging around coding and finding out why something is broken, and then figuring out how to resolve it.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Now I have kids, I don’t have any spare time but before they came along I liked to do a lot of pub sports like darts, pool, dominoes and poker – I enjoyed being part of a team and competing in tournaments.
You love guitar, how long have you been playing for?
I have been playing for roughly 15 years. I play cover songs as well as composing my own.
What’s your favourite Xbox game?
I play so many that it’s hard to narrow down, but I’d have to say the ‘Final Fantasy’ series.
What was your childhood dream job?
I had two: one was to be a rock star in a band and go touring and gigging, the other was to be a games developer at platform level.
What’s your favourite food?
I love tuna, and anything that involves it like pasta bake or casserole!
