Getting to Know: Ruth
You might have already seen that our senior social media executive Ruth Wilson has been shortlisted for Young Communicator of the Year at the 2018 CIPR PRide Awards, but can you guess which career path she almost took? Find out here, in the latest installment of our ‘getting to know’ series!
Tell us a bit about your role at Harris.
I’m the senior social media executive so, alongside our social media manager Karla, I create content across all of our clients’ social media channels as well as coming up with engaging campaigns and competitions. I’m also the office’s resident GIF-er and go-to girl for puns.
How would you describe the culture at Harris?
It’s a very relaxed atmosphere but we all collaborate and work really hard to get the job at hand done well. Then when we get together for dinner, drinks or movie nights we always have so much fun – we’re not like colleagues, it’s more like family.
What’s been your favourite project to work on so far?
Arbordexperts for our client Arbordeck. We started it as a small, bi-monthly competition on social media last year and due to its success we’ve relaunched it in partnership with Pro Landscaper Magazine this year, with a judging panel and amazing prizes. I can’t wait to see how it goes, and I feel proud to have been involved with the idea from the very start.
When did you decide you wanted to work in PR/social media?
It was actually my sister who gave me the idea of going to university to study PR. I’d always enjoyed writing and being creative but for some reason I had this idea in my head that I didn’t want to go to university and wanted to go into the police (permission to laugh at the idea of me as a police officer). PR seemed to play to my strengths and before I knew it I was applying for courses – Officer Ruth was not to be!
What was your childhood dream job?
I’ve always enjoyed writing and reading magazines so my dream job was being a journalist. When I went to university one of our lecturers told us that a lot of journalists end up in the PR industry so I just cut out the middle man!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
I once read that if you’re presented with an opportunity you should always say yes and figure it out later so I try to do that, within reason.
As a fan of anything sugary, can you pick a favourite sweet treat?
I absolutely can’t pick just one – I’m a sucker for a big tub of pick’n’mix to a point where I get multiple messages from various friends and family whenever they go on offer at Wilko.
You love cats – do you have any?
We have a family cat called Lily. I say she’s mine until she needs feeding or has made some sort of mess that needs cleaning up, and then she’s my Mum’s cat.
What’s your favourite TV show?
Friends. I was once so deep into a Friends binge hole that I sleepwalked into my Mum’s room asking for my friend Phoebe – I knew at that point it was time to stop.
